Have you ever caught yourself blaming your ‘inadequacies’ for not improving in ballet?I’ve heard so many different complaints from students over the years:
‘I wish I was quicker at picking up choreographies.’
‘I wish I was more confident.’
I remember I had this conversation with a friend and fellow dancer. She told me that she envied my intelligence, how deeply I understood movement and that she could never be as good as I was.
At the same time, I was thinking how ‘lucky’ she was. Evidently, she was learning choreography so fast and her ‘balon’ (= her ability to jump high) was out of this world. Often, the grass is always greener, but…
The truth is that I was able to understand and analyse movement and technique better than my friend. Simultaneously, she was better at jumping and learning choreography. Was one of us a better dancer though? Most likely not. We had our individual strengths and weaknesses, because we both are perfectly imperfect humans.
The bottom line is that we helped each other a lot. I observed how she took in new combinations. That made me realise that I was so preoccupied with the technical details, I was missing the big picture.
My friend, on the other hand, asked me to spend some time after lessons and go over some technical steps, and so we did.
We just had different learning processes. And that’s the truth for every dancer. No matter where you are in your ballet journey, you have some strengths and weaknesses.
The point is to be aware of them and learn how to leverage your talents and work with your weaknesses. This way, you’ll progress in the most effective way possible.
How your ballet personality can affect your progress
All the above have tortured ballet students, especially adults, for ages. I was definitely confused for a long time. One thing that adds to this problem is the ‘ballet mould’ which very often is pushed onto ballet students.
I wish I had someone to tell me that there was nothing wrong with me; that I shouldn’t find my natural talents or hate myself for my shortcomings; that I should work WITH those things for the best possible result for me.
That’s why I’ve assumed this role now for my students and all of you who like to read my insights. That’s why I’ve developed something really special for you; something that’s a game changer; something that you’ve never seen before:
MY BALLET PERSONALITY QUIZ
This quiz is a wonderful tool to help you uncover your unique ballet personality. This quiz will help you identify what your biggest strengths are and leverage them. At the same time to discover what areas need more nurturing and improving and work on them.
When I was younger I’ve been told that I’m too pernickety about the details. Also, I shouldn’t just focus on ballet if I wanted to have a chance of succeeding in the dance world. I should be tougher.
Nobody said that my analytical mind would be a wonderful asset when I was doing my Masters’ in Dance. That by focusing on my favourite dance style (even if I’m not considered a-born-to-be-a-ballerina) would allow me to understand the mechanics of ballet technique better.
Therefore, I’d be much more equipped to help my students. Nobody told me that by not supporting the traditional ‘tough love’ way of teaching ballet would make my students feel really comfortable around me.
This means that they’re allowed to mess up, learn from their mistakes and become more confident. No teacher ever told me any of that. I uncovered all of that by myself, through the outpouring of love in studying and teaching ballet.
This is true for you too! You have assets at your disposal that can boost your ballet progress. It’s possible that you don’t know what they are or how you can benefit from them. That’s why I’m right ahead of you with my ballet quiz. Once you’ve taken it you’ll learn:
- Your biggest strengths and talents.
- Your weaknesses and how to work with them.
- The best next steps in your ballet journey.
- How to navigate ballet challenges.
- How to enjoy a fulfilling dance path.
A little back story on the ballet personality quiz
The idea for this came to me a few years ago when I was taking another quiz about something completely different which really inspired and helped me. In general, I love quizzes! They’re really fun, but usually not really helpful! Either because the answer doesn’t actually teach you anything or it’s too general and doesn’t go very deep.
But that quiz I took back then was different! It really gave me some answers on areas that troubled me. It made me think a lot about my answers, myself and why I make certain choices in life.
At the same time, my method of teaching ballet has always been based on differentiating based on the student. Leveraging different methods of teaching taking into account the personality, stage of life and goals of the student has worked for me 100% of the time.
So, that made me think about how cool it would be to have a tool like this about ballet. I did my research and as expected, I couldn’t find what I was looking for. So, I decided to create it myself! I’ve taught hundreds of students over the last twelve years, so I’ve noticed different patterns and behaviours a lot. So, I started studying on this and two years later… tada!
I’m bringing you this quiz. As you can imagine, your result won’t just be a couple of lines… Oh, no, no! You’ll get a thorough outcome and I’ll provide you with useful resources, best next steps, tips on how to navigate ballet challenges and more.
